In the west side of the
Great Sand Sea lies the enigmatic silica glass - ultra pure glass, 98% silica - discovered by
P. Clayton in 1932 and believed by some scientists to be the result of a meteoritic impact. Another theory has it that these pieces are remains of a dried up lake. The silica field is located in the
Great Sand Sea between two dune ridges 200 m high.
