Beta Maryam or the house of Mary. An elegant little church, 15x11 m. and 10 high, one of the most venerated of Lalibela. Behind the church is a tank dug into the rock and filled with stagnant water, where, at Christmas, the women who do not have children are immersed in the hope of the miracle of motherhood. Beta Mariam is the only frescoed church of Lalibela. A central sacred pillar, covered by a veil, has been touched by God in one of his appearances at King Lalibela, and symbolizes the unity of the Christian faith. -
