Silk Road - Yungang caves
Ancient system of caves around Datong. Excellent example of architecture carved into the rock as in Mogae and Longmen. The caves were dug mainly during the Wei dynasty, between 460 and 525, and will provide an important set of temples dedicated to Buddhism. Throughout the complex there are 252 caves and over 51,000 Buddha statues, the sizes ranging from 4 centimeters to 7 meters. The caves are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. - See the Silk Road map with a complete picture set.
