Cajamarca is known as the place where the Inca empire finally fell to the Spaniards. The last Inca Atahualpa was captured here after a brief battle. He offered to buy his freedom by filling a room to a height of an arms length above his head, once with gold and twice with silver. It was agreed, he also had to covert to Catholicism.
